The director of a yacht management firm was cleared of manslaughter charges bought on by the death of four sailors in 2014.Four U.K. men – two in their twenties and two in their fifties – were killed when the 40-foot Cheeki Rafiki capsized in the Atlantic in May 2014 while returning across the Atlantic Ocean to Southampton from Antigua. IYT’s Solution to Certification Fraud
Due to the continued increase of counterfeit marine certificates, International Yacht Training (IYT) recognized the need for real-time verification of qualifications and has incorporated a verification QR code into certificates. Scanning the QR code using a smart phone takes you directly to a secure server which verifies the student’s identity and IYT qualifications. Information regarding the school attended and instructor who taught the class is also available. In 2011 IYT began to develop an online school and student database and anticipated the need for more sophisticated security measures.
