Ship data consumption is booming, and as digitalization and data trends increasingly drive the maritime world, Inmarsat celebrated a pair of milestones, hitting the 10,000 vessel mark on Fleet Xpress installations and launching its "Fleet Data Academy."Traffic DoublesAccording to Inmarsat, the growth in Fleet Xpress now includes the world’s leading container ship and tanker owners, such as MOL, K-Line and Hapag-Lloyd, offshore support giants like Bourbon, Tidewater and Maersk Supply, as well as growing numbers of yachts, passenger ships and fishing boats.

Cheeki Rafiki Update: No sign of Missing British Sailors
Planes and ships from the United States, Canada, and Britain have turned up no fresh signs of four British sailors missing in the Atlantic, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Wednesday, adding search efforts would continue. The crew members on board the yacht Cheeki Rafiki went missing on Friday as they were returning to Britain from a sailing event in Antigua in the Caribbean and reported that the vessel was taking on water, forcing them to change course for the Azores. Isle of Man Maritime Group Announces IFB Event Plans
The Isle of Man Maritime Group has announced its event plans for the International Festival of Business 2014 (IFB 2014), during the Maritime, Logistics and Energy themed week in June. The IFB is a global business event, taking place in the UK, Liverpool throughout June and July, with a target audience of 250,000 business professionals and advisors from over 125 countries. The Festival is supported by the UK Government and aims to promote business in the North West and accelerate economic growth with an ambitious programme of over 100 themed global business events.
Spirit of Malabo Nears Completion of Tests
The 24-foot Brazilian made ocean rowboat christened the Spirit of Malabo nears completion of tests before its maiden transatlantic journey from Gran Canaria, Canary Islands to New York with a resupply in the British Virgin Islands. The vessel is currently docked at Pasito Blanco La Punta Yacht Club. “The VHF, AIS, 24 hour tracking, radar, epirb, navigation lights, rowing seats and solar panels are working. AIDS Fighting Rowboat Readies for Next Mission
The Spirit of Malabo, a 24’ foot Brazilian built ocean rowboat, was hoisted from the Jamaica Bay at Gateway Marina early and rolled on a cradle with Service Caster wheels. The vessel will be used to promote voluntary HIV testing during a transatlantic row from the Canary Islands to New York with a resupply in the British Virgin Islands later this year. Newbuild Jack-up Rig Charter Exended
Maersk Drilling receives two-year term extension for newbuild jack-up rig 'XL Enhanced 2'. Det Norske Oljeselskap ASA (Det norske) has on behalf of the partners in the Ivar Aasen project, exercised its contractual right to extend the contract for the newbuild ultra harsh environment jack-up, XL Enhanced 2, by two years. Consequently, the duration of the firm contract is now five years. The estimated value of the two-year contract extension is approximately USD 280 million, bringing the total estimated contract value to approximately USD 700 million. Det norske has options to extend the contract up to a total of seven years.
'Home is the Sailor,' via Maersk
Troels Kløvedal has sailed the seven seas in his yacht Nordkaperen since 1967, but now returns to his native Denmark with his boat. This summer, Troels will be travelling by sea around his home country, filming for a TV show on the new TV2 FRI channel, launching in Denmark in May. In order to stay clear of the piracy in the Indian Ocean, Troels opted for having the Nordkaperen moved on a container vessel, and of course, Maersk Line were ready to assist and the yacht was loaded on Estelle Maersk in Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia for a final destination in Aarhus, a direct move on the AE10 service.
NZ America's Cup Entrant Hitches Maersk Ride
Emirates Team New Zealand’s ‘AC72’ catamaran is on its way to San Francisco to compete in the America’s Cup regatta, courtesy of sponsor Maersk Line. The Port of Auckland witnessed a spectacular sight recently as the massive 72-foot multihull yacht, named ‘New Zealand’, was hoisted out of the water and placed safely onto the deck of the Maersk Jubail. It’s break bulk cargo to Maersk Line, but to Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ), twice winner of the Americas Cup, it’s the start of their journey to win back the coveted trophy.
