King StarBoard Turns 25
King StarBoard, the original, marine-grade HDPE polymer sheet, is a quarter-century old, but just getting warmed when it comes to new applications such as outdoor kitchens and healthcare furnishings.
“Our original StarBoard has proven itself for more than two decades in the most severe marine environments on the finest boats and yachts,” said Jeff King, president of King Plastic Corporation. “We are pleased to celebrate 25 years of success with this product as we continue to create new business opportunities for cabinet and furniture makers everywhere.”
King, along with his father Tom King, developed the environmentally stabilized polymer sheet in 1988 after realizing that wood and plywood boat components were high-maintenance at best, and subject to rot and other deformities at worst. King StarBoard is made to last a lifetime and can be fabricated using common woodworking tools and techniques, with joint strength four times stronger than MDF, according to company testing.
King says King StarBoard still leads the industry in marine applications, but now has expanded to include an outdoor kitchen variety called King StarBoard ST, a non-slip version called King StarBoard AS, and an integrated permanent anti-microbial called King MicroShield–all available in a rich matte finish and a contemporary color palette designed to please commercial and residential designers alike.
Using King Plastic’s proprietary K-Stran process, the company is able to achieve industry-leading quality tolerances in dimension, density, finish and flatness. Finished products made from King StarBoard sheets are easy to clean, resistant to cleaning products, impervious to water, and never need refinishing.
