Like many boys, Charles. F. “Bud” Kirby, Jr. loved ships. He had drawings, models, pictures, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks. And, as his son, Don, recently learned, he had cachet covers of submarines.Bud would send stamped envelopes to the Electric Boat Company that he had addressed to himself in Watertown, Mass. These envelopes would be stamped with a commemorative cachet and then appropriately cancelled at Groton, Connecticut, where the EB shipyard was located, or on the ship if it had been commissioned.Each ship has its own post office, and its own cancellation stamp.

Luxury Yacht Seized in Money Laundering Probe
Indonesian police on Thursday questioned the captain and crew of a luxury yacht in Bali at the request of U.S. authorities, probing alleged money laundering at a Malaysian state fund, they said. The yacht was impounded in Bali on Wednesday amid a multi-billion dollar corruption investigation launched by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and tied to Malaysian state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). Police seized the yacht, Equanimity, after receiving a letter on Feb. 21 from the U.S.

Strong winds in the Da Nang New Discovery of Asia Race have led to some thrilling racing conditions for the Clipper Race fleet, with teams recording speeds of over 32 knots near the virtual mark at the most southern point of the course. The choppy sea state presents its own challenges for the crew but as the front runners begin their journey north, conditions are expected to ease slightly over the next couple of days as a high develops off the south of Japan. As Derry~Londonderry~Doire continues to lead the fleet, GREAT Britain and Garmin are in an ongoing battle for second place.
KVH Upgrades IP-MobileCast Service
KVH Industries has updated its unique IP-MobileCastTM content delivery service for additional viewing flexibility and expanded content offerings. The new features are being rolled out in stages, with the first round of upgrades automatically delivered via over-the-air software updates for current subscribers. IP-MobileCast was developed by KVH and launched in 2014 as the first and only service to multicast movies, TV shows, daily news and sports, as well as operational data via satellite to vessels at sea.
Yacht Race from Hong Kong to the Philippines
Approximately 34 yachts are expected to participate in a race from Hong Kong to the Philippines will take place from April 16-21, GAC said in its daily Hot Port News report. The race will commence on Wednesday, April 16 at 1:20 p.m. off the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter. It will follow a route through the eastern harbor and Tathong Channel to the east of Waglan Island, thence to the Philippines. Masters, coxswains and persons-in-charge of vessels navigating in the vicinity of the race route should proceed with caution, giving practical consideration to the contestants.

FURUNO Accredited Another Training Center
VERITAS Maritime Training Center in Manila has joined the FURUNO NavSkills network of training centers. Since December 2012, VERITAS MTC has provided FURUNO type specific ECDIS training to navigators under the FURUNO NavSkills training contract. Under the NavSkills agreement VERITAS MTC will accommodate a total of six training workstations: Four ECDIS FEA-2107 workstations and two next generation, state-of-the-art FMD-3200 workstations with three training instructors certified by FURUNO to conduct FURUNO type specific ECDIS training. VERITAS MTC is a part of Epsilon Hellas (Overseas) Ltd. and was established in January 2012.

The MV Princess Danae, which has a capacity to carry more than 800 passengers and crew, is registered in Madeira and flies the flag of Portugal. In the High Court, Mr Justice Roderick Murphy said he was satisfied to issue a warrant under a 1952 International Maritime Convention allowing for the arrest and detention of the Portuguese registered cruise ship, reports the 'Irish Independent'.
