British Golden Globe Yachtswoman Rescued by Cargo Ship
British solo round-the-world yachtswoman Susie Goodall was rescued by a cargo ship on Friday after her boat capsized and lost its mast during a violent storm in the southern Pacific Ocean.The 29-year-old, the youngest entrant in the Golden Globe race, had waited two days for the Hong Kong-registered Tian Fu to arrive after sending a distress signal from 2,000 nautical miles west of Cape Horn.The signal was picked up by Falmouth Coastguard in southwest England, with the alert passed on to race control and the Chilean maritime search and rescue authorities."ON THE SHIP!!!," she said on her Twitter feed after the rescue.Race organisers had earlier reporte

Volvo Penta to Power Volvo Ocean Race
Volvo Penta is the official engine supplier for the 2014-2015 Volvo Ocean Race, which is having its North American stopover in Newport, R.I., this week. “The Volvo Ocean Race serves as a crucible for developing and testing new technologies that will benefit the entire marine industry,” said Ron Huibers, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas. Each of the One-Design Volvo Open 65 sailboats is equipped with a single Volvo Penta D2-75 four-cylinder diesel engine with S-drive. The engines are primarily used to produce electricity for the freshwater maker, lights, heating and electronic navigation and communication systems.

The Royal Australian Navy operated Sail Training Ship Young Endeavour set sail from Sydney today for a 12-month voyage, circumnavigating the globe. Wataru Sakamoto defied home advantage and the rankings to win the Asia regional final of the ISAF Nations Cup in Vladivostok and qualify for the Grand Final in Middelfart, Denmark on August 6-10, 2013. After three days racing in Platu 25s in stable 6-12 knot south-easterly winds at the Seven Feet Yacht Club on the waters of Amursky Bay, Sakamoto dominated Singapore’s Maximilian Soh in the final on Sunday, reeling off three successive victories. Several years ago I found myself on a tourist boat that carries out whale watching tours in Península de Valdés, Patagonia, Argentina. This location became famous over the last 30 years, due to the massive yearly encounter of the southern right whales (Eubalena australis) during their mating and birth period from May to December. The southern right whale got its name due to the friendly behavior and the fact that they float when the animal is dead. This was the ‘right’ whale to chase.
