Non-composite Composite Decking: Really?

NyloBoard's Dr. Shae Brown shares global insights on emerging technologies for decking materials.

NyloDeck manufactured by NyloBoard is called the “non-composite” composite decking material because it contains no wood or PVC and is not a cap stock product. Its material composition uses recycled carpet fiber and VOC-free resins to create exceptionally strong, durable and eco-friendly deck boards that are impervious to moisture, mold, mildew and termites, and will not swell or rot.

Global advancements in materials and manufacturing featured at The 2013 European Coatings Show and Congress are finding their way to the latest composite decking materials, according to Shae Brown, senior chemist at NyloBoard, LLC , who recently attended the Show in Nuremburg, Germany. NyloBoard produces NyloDeck®, a new generation of composite decking that is sourced and made in the U.S. and contains 100 percent recycled carpet fiber, with no wood or PVC.

Brown recounted top trends and insights from the Show, along with their potential impact for NyloDeck:
1. Shared knowledge is helping manufacturers address production holistically to identify individual opportunities for greater sustainability.
“By learning from other companies’ and industries’ best practices, we’re looking at how a single step in our production line can either be removed or combined, without sacrificing any quality. That one change can add up to significant energy efficiency, which contributes to improved sustainability.”
2. Coatings, which are considered more environmentally friendly, are becoming increasingly prevalent for building materials, without compromising durability.
