MarineMax Acquires Hall Marine Group

MarineMax, Inc.,  recreational boat and yacht retailer, has announced that it has completed the acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Hall Marine Group. Hall Marine was founded in the mid 1970’s by Rod and Fran Hall. With fiscal 2016 revenue exceeding $50 million, Hall Marine is one of the largest privately-owned boat dealers in the Southeast. Hall Marine operates through six locations covering the following markets: Charlotte, North Carolina; Lake Wylie, Greenville, Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina; and Savannah, Georgia. The locations include two large marinas and four highway locations.

Atlantic Hurricane Season to be Stronger than Expected

In its updated 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook, NOAA calls for a higher likelihood of a near-normal or above-normal season, and decreases the chance of a below-normal season to only 15 percent, from the initial outlook issued in May. The season is still expected to be the most active since 2012. Forecasters now expect a 70-percent chance of 12–17 named storms, of which 5–8 are expected to become hurricanes, including 2–4 major hurricanes. The initial outlook called for 10–16 named storms, 4–8 hurricanes, and 1–4 major hurricanes. The seasonal averages are 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

ABC Draws 35 Industry Organizations as Co-hosts

The 2016 American Boating Congress (ABC) will be co-hosted by 35 industry organizations, working together to create a dynamic and engaging program that meets the needs of the entire recreational boating industry. Now in its fourth year, the ABC co-host program brings together organizations across all industry segments to strengthen recreational boating’s collective advocacy impact. These organizations have committed their time and resources in order to develop an event that will create a louder voice for recreational boating on Capitol Hill. ABC will be held in Washington, DC on May 9-11, 2016.

MarineMax to Debut Sea Pro Models in Tampa Bay

MarineMax Clearwater will be displaying the latest models from Sea Ray, Boston Whaler and Scarab Jet Boats as well as presenting the debut of Sea Pro models at the Tampa Bay Boat Show March 11 – 13. “We are excited to have several new models to display at this year’s Tampa Bay Boat Show at Tropicana Field,” stated Jack Ezzell, MarineMax Clearwater General Manager. Grounding Kills 1, Injures 2 in Charleston Harbor

One person was killed and two people were injured when a boat ran aground on Shutes Folly off Charleston, South Carolina, late Thursday evening, the U.S. Coast Guard reported. One man was killed after being ejected from the vessel. Two female passengers were treated for injuries and were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Charleston received the initial report of the incident from one of the injured passengers, stating their recreational boat had run aground with enough force to eject one person from the boat.

The American Boat & Yacht Council and the National Marine Manufacturers Association South Carolina  have joined forces to present ABYC certification courses in Charleston, South Carolina. The first course will be the ABYC Marine Electrical Certification on September 9-12. The SC Department of Natural Resources will host the class at their Marine Resources & Research Institute classroom. This is a great opportunity for our South Carolina members to send their staff to ABYC certification courses,” explained Suzi DuRant, NMMA SC’s Executive Director.

American Boating Congress Draws 36 Co-hosts

In 2013, the American Boating Congress (ABC) was co-hosted by 31 industry organizations who worked together to create a dynamic and engaging program, that met the needs of the entire recreational boating industry. Boeing and Oracle Team USA (winner of the 34th America's Cup) are collaborating to recycle 7,000 pounds (about 3,175 kilograms) of carbon fiber of USA-71, a yacht built for the America's Cup campaign in 2003. The hull and mast of the racing yacht will be processed and repurposed, a first-of-its-kind effort for what will likely be the largest carbon structure ever recycled. Employees from across all sectors of the U.S. recreational boating industry are gathering on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC today and tomorrow for the annual American Boating Congress (ABC) to advocate on behalf of the industry’s 350,000 workers and 82 million boaters. With the unofficial start to boating season just under a month away on Memorial Day weekend, ABC gives members of the U.S. recreational boating industry a timely platform to  meet with legislators and other decision makers on Capitol Hill, hear from prominent economic and political speakers and participate all while meeting with colleagues from around the country.
