Salvors Send Crane Barge to Refloat Yacht that Grounded in Puerto Rico
Salvors are sending a crane barge to lift a yacht that ran aground on a coral reef just off Puerto Rico's Flamenco Beach.The 72-foot sailing catamaran Obsession was reportedly traveling with four people on board from Puerto Rico to the British Virgin Islands when it struck a reef during a stop in Culebra on July 21. No injuries were reported.To remove the vessel, salvage and marine services contractor Resolve Marine has deployed its 400-ton shear-leg barge. Coast Guard Assists Sailing Vessel 50 Miles off NC
The Coast Guard saved three mariners aboard a disabled sailing vessel more than 50 miles east southeast of Cape Lookout, Saturday evening.At 9:45 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received notification of the 36-foot disabled sailing vessel Cloud from Sea Tow. Sea Tow Foundation Names Executive Director
Michael Wesolowski was appointed the new executive director of the Sea Tow Foundation. Established in 2007 by Sea Tow Services International Founder Capt. Joe Frohnhoefer, the 501(c)(3) foundation is dedicated to promoting boating safety and education. Wesolowski, a recreational boater with a background in nonprofit marketing and communications, got hooked on working with charitable organizations when he volunteered for F.O.C.U.S. Greater Syracuse, a citizen-driven community building effort while living in the Syracuse, N.Y., area.
Busy Start to U.S. National Safe Boating Week
At 5 p.m., the captain of the Lucky Isabella reported the death of a crewmember who had fallen overboard. They were able to recover the man, but were unable to save him. The man was reportedly not wearing a lifejacket. A medical examiner and Coast Guard investigator met them as they returned to port. Earlier, at 3:30 p.m., a Station Sabine boatcrew responded to a 36-foot sailboat taking on water in the vicinity of the Martin Luther King Bridge in Port Arthur. The boatcrew arrived on scene and assisted in dewatering the sailboat, then towed it back to a haul-out facility.
USCG Responds to Vessel Fire
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reported it is responding to a report of a vessel that caught fire and became disabled with two men and a dog aboard south of the McCormick Bridge in the Intracoastal Waterway in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., Thursday. A boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Mayport, Fla., is currently on scene with the vessel, the fire is extinguished and there are no injuries reported, the USCG said. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department notified watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville command center of the situation at 7:54 a.m.
