Strong Demand Helps Ski-Doo Maker BRP Shrink Its Loses

BRP Inc's net loss halved in the second quarter as the company sold more of its flagship Ski-Doo snowmobiles and Sea-Doo watercrafts. The Quebec-based company said strong demand for products such as the Sea-Doo Spark watercraft, Can-Am Spyder motorcycles and side-by-side off-roaders drove up seasonal product sales by 85 percent to C$259.8 million ($235 million) in the quarter ended July 31. Canadian Completes Solo Atlantic Row, With Just a Little Help

Quebec rower Mylène Paquette has arrived in Lorient, France, after a  voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, the first North American to row solo, from west to east, across the North Atlantic, reports CBC News. Mylène left Halifax just over four months ago in a specially designed 7.3 metre boat propelled only by herself and the currents. Earlier in her voyage, In September 2013, the lone rower got a helping hand from the cruise ship Queen Mary 2, after being hit by the remnants of Hurricane Humberto, losing key items including her anchor, iPhone and satellite phone.

GE Capital Sees Rebound for Canadian Boat Builders

GE Capital’s Commercial Distribution Finance (CDF) business said it has seen positive trends in the Canadian marine, motorsports and recreational vehicle (RV) industries through the first half of the year. It expects favorable conditions to continue into 2014. A 17 percent increase over last year’s marine industry volume is within striking distance of pre-downturn figures nationwide. There has been considerable growth year-over-year in the prairies and in the Atlantic region, although Ontario and Quebec still account for the most volume by province.
