Ship Design: Zero-Emission Cruise Ship Concept Unveiled

Northern Xplorer AS (NX) announced itszero-emission, luxury cruise concept, designed to feature 'clean' technologies including fully electric propulsion, battery energy storage, hydrogen fuel cells and auxiliary renewable energy supply (wind and solar power). Northern Xplorer will provide opportunities to travel ‘off the beaten track’, connecting passengers with unique locations in the Nordic countries in a personal way,” said Rolf André Sandvik, the company's founder and CEO. Sandvik is a master mariner with extensive experience with cruise lines NCL and Crystal Cruises.

Peters & May Appoints Judson as CEO

Marine transport and logistics provider Peters & May has appointed Simon Judson as its new CEO with immediate effect. A 20-year veteran of the marine industry, Judson previously held the position of Global Operations Director with the company. He joined the company in 2009 when Peters & May purchased Judson’s own marine logistics and yacht transportation company, Complete Freight.Based in the U.K. head office, Judson will oversee the company’s range of services currently delivered through 10 company offices and a network of global agents.

Dutch Sailors Served Well by Vesconite Stern Bearings

Dutch-born world travelers Adri and Sytske Broekhuizen installed a Vesconite stern bearing in their 43 ft. aluminium sailing yacht, from the designer Koopmans in Lelystad, when they were docked in Singapore in 2008.“We chose Vesconite because we found a machine shop in Singapore that could make the bearing,” says Adri, of the polymer bearings, which are suitable for the submerged and corrosive conditions of the marine industry and have internal lubricants that allow for prolonged life where the set-ting is characterized by irregular greasing schedules…

As privately owned, luxury yachts near the size of the average cruise ship, behold a new option, which is anything but commonplace: The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. At 624 feet and 11 decks, her exterior profile resembles a sleek superyacht design, not a cruise ship on the horizon. Launched in October 2018 at Hijos de J. Barreras Shipyard in Vigo, Spain, the flagship of the new brand is now in outfitting and interior finishing. The project was co-managed by The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Marriott and Tillberg Design of Sweden.

Shipbuilding: Hurtigruten Hybrid Construction Forges Ahead

Norwegian company Hurtigruten, the world’s largest expedition cruise operator, is continuing to push the boundaries when it comes to green travel with its order for three hybrid-powered vessels nearing completion, the first ship being due for delivery in May 2019.Two of these revolutionary ships are currently under construction at the Kleven Yard in Ulsteinvik, Norway, the MS Roald Amundsen and its sister ship, the MS Fritjof Nansen, both of which are custom-designed to cope with some of the most extreme conditions seen on our planet, each having a specially-designed, ice-strengthened hull.

Amsterdam Attracts Superyachts

HISWA Holland Yachting Group and Port of Amsterdam announced in May 2018 their ambition to put Amsterdam on the map as a top destination for superyachts.The last two months more than 10 superyachts have chosen Amsterdam as their destination. New Weather App for Raymarine LightHouse OS

FLIR Systems, Inc. announced that the latest Raymarine LightHouse OS now includes a graphical weather forecast (GRIB) viewer app, which enables boaters to access Theyr global weather data on-demand directly on Raymarine multifunction navigation displays. The LightHouse GRIB Viewer app utilizes Wi-Fi connectivity to download and display high-resolution Theyr weather forecast information on- screen. Raymarine users simply connect to a marina Wi-Fi, a mobile hotspot, or satellite internet to download the latest forecasts.

Seapilot Navigation App Available for Windows Mobile Devices

True Heading announced the release of its Seapilot Navigation app for Windows mobile devices today. The Seapilot Navigation app had previously been available for Apple and Android devices. The app is now available for free download on the Windows Phone Store. Early Windows Store reviews, however, indicate required in-app purchases. The product's fine print indicates a free 36-hour trail period "with all functionality and all charts available for evaluation before purchase." Users also complained about a lack of maps for US coastal waters. The app displays S-57 vector chart data on its proprietary chart engine.

Seapilot has released its navigation app for Windows mobile devices. Continuing its focus on mobility, the Seapilot Navigation app, originally available on Apple and Android devices, is now available for free from the Windows Phone Store. Port of Kiel Expands Cruise Capacities

Extension of Berth No.1 at Kiel’s Ostuferhafen has started. The Port of Kiel – third largest turnaround port for cruises in northern Europe -  is expanding its handling capacities for cruise ships. Construction work for the extension of Berth No.1 at Ostuferhafen has begun, so that large cruise ships can dock there this summer already.
