Lionheart Prepares for Next Challenge in Newport

When she was completed by Claasen in 2010, the 43.40-meter Lionheart was the largest J-Class yacht ever built. It was a distinction she kept until the recent launch by Vitters of Svea, which came in at 20 centimeters longer. Lionheart was the first of her kind with an aluminium hull and incorporated lots of research gleaned from previous Js: no expense was spared to make her as competitive as possible in the regatta circuit. 2015 Newport Regatta in Narragansett Bay

The Newport Regatta is scheduled to take place in the East Passage Narragansett Bay vicinity between 10:00am to 5:00pm 10-12 July. 300 sailboats, from 8ft to 45ft in length, are expected. Mariners are advised to proceed with caution when transiting the area. Interested mariners may contact the person in charge by phone at 401-429-8258. Further, the Save the Bay’s Annual Swim is scheduled to be held in the East Passage of Narragansett Bay on Saturday (11 July) commencing at 7:00 a.m. and completing at approximately 11:00a.m. During this time the East Passage will be CLOSED to all vessel traffic, both commercial and recreational.

SSV Oliver Hazard Perry Scheduled for Newport Appearance

Fundraiser, dedication ceremony and public visits to highlight ship’s visit over July 4 weekend. It’s not just Rhode Island but the whole of North America that is watching as the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry becomes a reality. The 196-foot, three-masted, square rigged tall ship, currently under construction and designated by the legislature and the Governor of Rhode Island as the state’s official “Sailing Education Vessel,” is well on its way to becoming the largest civilian sail training vessel in North America and the first oceangoing full-rigged ship to be built in the U.S. in over 100 years.

Pine Bros Trophy favorites media mogul Ted Turner & "Mr. America's Cup" Dennis Conner, were beaten by Dennis Williams' 'Victory '83 Team'.
