Salvors Send Crane Barge to Refloat Yacht that Grounded in Puerto Rico

Salvors are sending a crane barge to lift a yacht that ran aground on a coral reef just off Puerto Rico's Flamenco Beach.The 72-foot sailing catamaran Obsession was reportedly traveling with four people on board from Puerto Rico to the British Virgin Islands when it struck a reef during a stop in Culebra on July 21. No injuries were reported.To remove the vessel, salvage and marine services contractor Resolve Marine has deployed its 400-ton shear-leg barge. ABYC Announces New Board, Officers

The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) hosted its 63rd annual meeting and announced the election of three new members to the board of directors as well as the election of four officers. The annual meeting included an awards presentation to recognize ABYC members who have provided exceptional service to the marine industry. Joining the board of directors is Christina Paul from K&L Gates LLC, David Johnson from Power Products LLC and Elio Betty from BoatU.S. Dave Marlow, who has served as board chairman for the past four years, introduced the new board members during ABYC’s annual meeting.

Gulfstream Wins DHS Ferry Contract

Gulfstream Shipbuilding won a contract through the United States Department of Homeland Security for a passenger/vehicle ferry to service the New York and Connecticut waters. US Boat Yard Fined for Dumping Wastewater

Billings Diesel and Marine Services, Inc. has reached a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) after the boat yard allegedly violated the Clean Water Act by discharging wastewater without authorization. According to the EPA’s allegations, the company dumped wastewater from boat-washing operations into the Deer Isle Thorofare, a major shipping channel connecting Penobscot Bay to the waters around Mount Desert Island and the open Atlantic Ocean to the east.

Super Yachts Give Boost to NZ Economy

New Zealand Customs Minister Nicky Wagner says mid-winter marks the end of another successful yacht season, with many of the remaining international yachts departing at the end of last month. "57 superyachts visited between April 2014 and March 2015 , compared with 37 during the previous season. This is the highest number of superyacht visits since we hosted the America's Cup in 2000," Ms Wagner said. Overall, customs has cleared 620 arriving yachts since last spring. Marine Industry Executive Director Peter Busfield says the tourism and marine industry spend is huge.

Record Breaking Cruise Liner Season Ahead for Orkney

Orkney is set for a multimillion pound tourism bonanza with a record-breaking year of cruise liners due to visit. The number of cruise ships visiting Orkney will top the 80 mark for the first time this year, says a Orkney Islands Council press release. So far, 83 port calls by liners are expected in the islands – four more than in 2014. In total, the ships have the capacity to carry more than 80,000 passengers and 25,000 crew. More bookings are still expected for 2015. Michael Morrison, business development manager for Council's marine services, said that they all set for a record-breaking year for cruise ship visits.
