Sanlorenzo Yachts UK & Ireland announced the sale of the first Sanlorenzo SX88 to be based in the United Kingdom.First launched in 2017, the 26.70m SX88 is an extremely popular model for the Sanlorenzo shipyard, with over 30 of the yachts already sold.Nick Hatfield, sales manager for Sanlorenzo UK, said, “The first U.K.-based Sanlorenzo SX88 has now arrived here where she will undergo her pre-delivery inspection before being handed over to her new owners, ready for a summer of cruising the south coast of the U.K.

In line with a sports policy driven by its President HSH Prince Albert II, the Yacht Club de Monaco is organizing the first Monaco Globe Series early June, the first stage of the new IMOCA (2018-2020) Championship. The second will be the Route du Rhum in November which celebrates its 40th anniversary. With nine of the 60-footers already registered and one pending confirmation, the double-handed non-stop offshore race without assistance is a chance for competitors to rack up points towards selection for the Vendée Globe 2020.

GAC Host Sport Relief Celebrities for Safety at Sea Training

Six celebrities swapping the comforts of the studio for five days at sea, as they attempt to sail around the UK on the BT Sport Relief Challenge: Hell on High Seas, have been prepared for the challenge at the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI). Captained by Ian Walker, the first British skipper to win the Volvo Ocean Race, the crew consists of BBC1’s The One Show presenter Alex Jones, Angellica Bell, Hal Cruttenden, Doon Mackichan, Ore Oduba and Suzi Perry. They set off from Belfast Harbour on Monday and are due to arrive in London on Friday.

French Cruise Company PONANT Signs GAC UK

PONANT Yacht Cruises & Expeditions has appointed GAC UK as its agent for all United Kingdom and Ireland port calls in 2016. PONANT’s 142m and 132 cabin megayachts Le Boréal and L’Austral will cruise around the British Isles and Ireland, including the Scilly Isles, Shetlands, Dublin, Liverpool and Scottish Highlands in May and June next year. Fergus Poole, GAC UK’s newly appointed Cruise Manager, said the high prestige business is a boost to GAC’s growing cruise operations in and around the UK and Ireland.

German Cruise Market Looks Top Slot

The ocean cruise market in Germany continues to be one of the fastest-growing tourism sectors. Going by current trends, Germany could rival the UK’s position as the second largest ocean cruise market. Clia Germany revealed at ITB Berlin that 1.77 million German passengers took an ocean cruise in 2014 – a notable rise compared with the 1.7 million that cruised from the UK in 2013. Minister Calls for ‘Sea Change’ in Maritime Safety Culture

Ireland’s Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has called for a sea change in attitudes to maritime safety, as he launched a new consultation process on maritime safety: Sea Change – Building a new Maritime Safety Culture. Minister Varadkar highlighted the 134 maritime fatalities which have occurred since 2002, almost half of which were as a result of leisure activities on recreational craft. He was speaking at the launch of the consultation process in the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport which included stakeholders from shipping, fishing, leisure, passenger operators, maritime safety and many other sectors.

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar TD has announced the publication of the Merchant Shipping (Registration of Ships) Bill 2013. The Bill is one of the Minister’s legislative priorities and is part of an overall objective to update and enhance the national maritime legislative code, and ensure the safety of maritime transport services. The importance of ship registration is that it confers Irish nationality on ships, allowing them to fly the Irish flag and register ownership. The new Bill will provide a basis for the introduction of an updated and modernized ship registration system in Ireland.
