Mediterranean - A New Playground for IMOCAs

In line with a sports policy driven by its President HSH Prince Albert II, the Yacht Club de Monaco is organizing the first Monaco Globe Series early June, the first stage of the new IMOCA (2018-2020) Championship. The second will be the Route du Rhum in November which celebrates its 40th anniversary. With nine of the 60-footers already registered and one pending confirmation, the double-handed non-stop offshore race without assistance is a chance for competitors to rack up points towards selection for the Vendée Globe 2020.

Married Couple Set Mid-Pacific Rowing Speed Record

Meredith Loring and Sami Inkinen, a married couple based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, began their unsupported rowing expedition on June 18, 2014, out of Monterey Harbor, rowing more than 60 miles a day to cover their 2,800-mile Pacific crossing to Honolulu in 45 days and four hours. While they set the new pair’s speed record for a Mid-Pacific crossing, the couple’s expedition was largely an effort to bring attention to the dangers of sugar and to help decrease raising levels of childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Endeavour Quay Welcomes Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing

Endeavour Quay announced that Volvo Ocean Race team, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, has chosen the Gosport facility as its summer race preparation and training facility. Abu Dhabi’s VO70 AZZAM, which means determination in Arabic, arrived last month and is now in one of the large boat sheds ready for some refit work. Servicing and race preparation work has begun on AZZAM at Endeavour Quay in time for a return to the water and the start line of Cowes Week and the RORC Fastnet Race on August 11.

Vendée Globe, Everest of Yachtsmanship, Underway

The Vendée Globe 2012-2013, is a round-the-world single-handed yacht race, sailed non-stop and without assistance, a serious test of endurance. The race started last Saturday and finishes in Les Sables-d'Olonne , in the Vendée département of France ; both Les Sables d’Olonne and the Vendée Conseil Général are official race sponsors. The course is essentially a circumnavigation along the clipper route : from Les Sables d’Olonne, down the Atlantic Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope ; then clockwise around Antarctica , keeping Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn to port; then back to Les Sables d’Olonne.
